The 7 Wellness: What Is It?

Seven different aspects of Wellness remain often considered to exist: mental, physical, social, financial, spiritual, environmental, and occupational. These factors interact and have an impact on one another. The other aspects of our wellbeing remain impacted when one dimension is out of balance.

None of these categories can remain disregarded if one is to stay regarded as “well.” The Health and Wellbeing Educators (HAWES) at Roger Williams University aim to teach you how to improve your wellbeing.

  • Physical Exercise! Your health will remain significantly improved even by walking for 30 minutes daily, three times weekly.
  • Eat Sensibly. Steer clear of fried meals, sodas, processed meats, and sweets. Try to eat five servings of fruits and vegetables each day.
  • Avoid skipping meals. It slows your metabolism and might lead to weight gain, especially breakfast.
  • Steer clear of frequent excessive drinking and drug usage—no more than five drinks for males and four for women in one sitting. Don’t space out your beverages over time, and alternate them with glasses of water.
  • Sleep for at least 6 to 8 hours each night.

The Wellness Continuum

One approach to comprehending Wellness is thinking of health as a continuum stretching from disease to optimal wellbeing. On the one hand, sick individuals use the medical paradigm to treat their ailments; they communicate reactively and sporadically with healthcare providers like physicians and clinicians. On the other hand, proactive prevention and maximizing vitality are the main concerns of individuals. They adopt behaviors and attitudes that promote health, fight off sickness, improve quality of life, and make them feel better about themselves. In other words, self-responsibility motivates Wellness and is proactive, preventative, and intentional. The expansion of this consumer value and worldview is what has led to the rise of health.

Healthcare is distinct from Wellness. Our healthcare systems’ pathogenic and reactive strategy focuses on the causes, effects, diagnosis, and treatment of illnesses and injuries. In contrast, Wellness is a proactive, salutogenic strategy emphasizing healthy living, prevention, and overall wellbeing. In the end, a strong foundation for wellness aids in the current and future prevention and treatment of disease.
