Migrant Health Write for us

Migrant Health Write for usMigrant Health Write for us – The experiences in their home country, the migration process, the entrance and integration policies of the host nation, and the living and working situations all impact the physical and mental health requirements of refugees and migrants. Refugees and migrants may be more susceptible to infectious and chronic illnesses due to their experiences.

Health services have been interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, putting those already at risk in danger and making it more difficult for health systems to meet their requirements.

Key Facts and Information on Refugees and Migrants

The term refugee is defined in Article 1 of the 1951 Convention regarding the Status of Refugees. There is no universally accepting definition of the term migrant. However, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs defines an international migrant as “anyone who changes their country of habitual residence,” and this definition includes people who are moving or have moved through an international border, regardless of their legal status. , length of stay abroad and causes of migration.

A migrant’s immigration status may restrict their rights and ability to get healthcare. However, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly with Sustainable Development Goal 3 (ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all ages), assures universal access.

Refugees and migrants are entitled to the same fundamental freedoms and universal human rights, despite being regulated by various legal systems.

Barriers to Accessing Health Services

Refugees and migrants continue to be among the most vulnerable members of society and often face xenophobia; discrimination; poor living, housing, and working conditions; and inadequate or restricted access to general health services.

Migrants, particularly in an irregular situation, are usually excluded from national programs for health promotion, disease prevention, treatment, care, and financial protection for health. They may also face high user fees, low levels of health literacy, low cultural competence among health providers, stigma, and inadequate interpretation services.

Those with impairments face even more significant obstacles. Access to protection and response services for sexual and gender-based violence may be difficult for women and girls. Children who are refugees or migrants, especially unaccompanied kids, are more prone to encounter traumatic events and stressful circumstances, such as exploitation and abuse, and they may find it difficult to get medical treatment.

Access to health services in humanitarian settings is often compromised and complicated by drug shortages and a lack of sanitation facilities.
