Hyaluronic acid Infiltrations: Postoperative Recovery

Why are They Done?

Hyaluronic acid injections are performed as a conservative treatment for diseases that produce an inflammatory or degenerative process in the joints. They are not treatments to treat the disease but to reduce pain and improve joint performance. Only surgery can provide a complete solution to this type of problem. Still, in young patients (> 65 years), there is a tendency to postpone it in favor of conservative treatments to avoid invasiveness and the possibility of having to repeat the operation for a second once due to wear of the implanted materials.

In general, after a cycle of injections, the painful symptoms may not appear for a year. At this point, you can duplication the procedure to benefit from the results again. The diseases that benefit the most from this treatment are osteoarthritis, tendonitis, chondropathy, capsulitis, fasciitis, fibrosis, and bursitis. Other conditions for which treatment may helpful, especially in the early stage or when anti-inflammatory treatment  contraindicated, gonarthrosis, coxarthrosis, osteoarthritis of the shoulder, spine, and fingers. Athletes also benefit from this, in particular, to prevent cartilage problems.

What Does it Consist of?

Injections carried out directly at the intra-articular level. They can performed in a single treatment with 20 mg of product or more frequently in a cycle with an injection every seven days for approximately 3-5 weeks. In the most severe cases, two processes can performed in a single year to obtain the best result.

Preparation for Hyaluronic acid Infiltrations

There are no specific rules of preparation for treatment, apart from the sterility of the skin at the time of injection to avoid possible infections.

Postoperative Recovery

In some cases, a temporary swelling may appear in the area where the infiltration has injected due to a mild inflammatory process. No additional treatments are necessary because, as already mentioned, these are temporary side effects that tend to disappear in a couple of days.
